Opisy stanowisk pracy stanowią podstawowy, a zarazem kluczowy element każdej właściwie prowadzonej polityki personalnej w organizacji. Zapewniają one pracownikowi czytelny obraz wymagań oraz możliwości, jakie stwarza organizacja. Stanowią wyjaśnienie wymogów kwalifikacyjnych, predyspozycji i wymaganej wiedzy specjalistycznej.
