Assessment Centre (Centrum Oceny, Ośrodki Oceny) oraz Development Center (Centrum Rozwoju, Ośrodki Rozwoju) to jedne z najskuteczniejszych metod (blisko 80% skuteczności) stosowanych do oceny kompetencji i umiejętności pracowników.
Celem badania Assessment Center jest zdiagnozowanie grupy kandydatów (mogą to być zarówno obecni pracownicy, osoby z zewnątrz firmy kandydujące na wakujące stanowisko, jak również obie te grupy jednocześnie) i wyłonienie spośród niej osób najlepiej spełniających wybrane kryteria (kompetencje, cechy) - np. osób o naturalnych zdolnościach przywódczych oraz potencjale predysponującym do objęcia kluczowych stanowisk menedżerskich. Wszyscy kandydaci są oceniani pod kątem specyficznych wymagań definiowanych przed przystąpieniem do badania.
Development Center stosuje się z kolei przy prowadzeniu wewnętrznej analizy potencjału kadry kierowniczej lub pracowników dla celów analizy potrzeb szkoleniowych, wyznaczenia ścieżek kariery i budowania kadry rezerwowej na kluczowe stanowiska w ramach organizacji.
Metody assessment i development center różnią się pomiędzy sobą celami, dla których się je stosuje, bowiem procedura badania opiera się na tych samych regułach. Ośrodki Oceny i Rozwoju łączą różnorodne techniki oceny w zakresie wykonywania zadań grupowych, wykonywania zadań indywidualnych w obecności grupy oraz wykonywania zadań indywidualnych bez uczestnictwa grupy. Stosowanie tej metody pozwala na wielotorową weryfikację każdego z kandydatów/ pracowników poddanych ocenie.
O skuteczności metody decydują następujące założenia:

• Kandydaci są obserwowani przez wielu oceniających (asesorów).
• Oceniający zmieniają się w poszczególnych zadaniach, aby zapewnić jak największą obiektywność ocen i nie sugerować się wynikami z poprzednich zadań (testów).
• Końcowa ocena jest wynikiem dyskusji i syntezy ocen wszystkich oceniających.
